The pleasure of your company is requested at the grand opening online event:

The main problem with Facebook groups is a problem that all online networking sites and offline networking groups face, insufficient engagement.

People find it easy to join a networking group but difficult to show up or to participate online or in meetings.

Facebook Groups Especially Problematic

One very serious limitation of Facebook groups is that posted content doesn’t appear in members’ news feeds.

This limitation doesn’t apply to Facebook pages and profiles. However, positioning and visibility of Facebook page and profile content on users’ news feeds is subject to Facebook EdgeRank.

Since content doesn’t appear in member’s news feeds, group members can only learn of new content or read that content if they happen to visit the group’s page.

Partial Solution to Facebook Groups Problem

Fortunately, this problem is partially offset by an important feature of Facebook groups. Moderators can send newsletters to group members that are delivered directly to their Facebook inboxes. Group newsletters can inform and help to increase participation.

Too many group creators use their group’s newsletters to spam members. Spamming members makes newsletters ineffective and kills any chance of getting members to participate. My advice is to keep members’ interests in mind when you mail them, not just your own.

Please don’t forget, you can broadcast newsletters directly to your members’ inboxes provided you don’t have 5,000 members or more, so limit the size of your membership.

That’s all I have to say about the problem with Facebook groups until you leave a comment.

And if you’re new, please take a few seconds to subscribe.

Security flaws that exposed private chats and other private information to so-called “friends” have enraged many Facebook members and critics.

In Facebook needs to face the music, InfoWorld links this misstep and previous Facebook transgressions to the social networking giant’s plans to control the web.

More Facebook backlash is likely, but this possibility doesn’t concern me very much.

My Key Facebook Concern

I am very concerned whether or not this incident will deter you from using Facebook for your social media marketing and digital public relations.

While many will use the Facebook blunder to justify their hesitation to market on Facebook, don’t you join their ranks. Don’t you let Facebook’s speed bump become your speed bump.

A Little Company Called Microsoft

How often has Microsoft released software that contained bugs and security glitches? Although their aggressive marketing has been held in check by anti-trust suits and fierce competition from Google and Apple, Microsoft continues to make billions and still dominates the PC niche despite a long history of computer software problems.

Please Ignore the Naysayers

My advice to you:

ignore all naysayers, there will always be plenty of them

get your Facebook page going and growing as quickly as possible

attract lots of targeted followers to your Facebook page

start your Facebook conversation and share your content

build your brand on Facebook and all over the social web

Come join my Facebook conversation too!

Have any comments? The floor is yours.

Yesterday, May 4, 2010, was a very sad day for social media and Web 2.0. We all suffered a tremendous loss. Yesterday was the day that Ning died.

No, Ning, the company, did not die; Ning, the company, is still very much alive, and many Ning social networking sites are alive as well, looking forward to upcoming Ning changes this July.

However, yesterday, Ning, the concept, was laid to rest.

A preliminary autopsy all but ruled out foul play. It suggested instead that perhaps too much user abuse and too little user engagement aggravated the Ning concept and hastened its sad demise.

The Ning concept was beautiful and elegant, a network of social networks.

Not only were contributions of social network end users Web 2.0 content, the individual social networks themselves were Web 2.0 content within the Ning meta social network.

The Ning concept leaves behind thousands of Ning social network creators seeking new homes. Many homes are ready to take them in but cannot accommodate them to the extent that Ning and the late Ning concept had accommodated them in the past.

Nevertheless, bereaved Ning social network creators who loved the Ning concept maintain hope for the future.

Ning concept, 2007-2010, rest in peace.

I cannot stress enough the importance of starting a blog: I’ve listed many reasons for blogging in the Top Reasons Why I Blog and discussed why “there ain’t nothing like a blog” in Why Blogs Make More Sense.

However, despite all the great reasons to have a blog, you might feel that investing in a blog isn’t right for you and your situation.

In that case, I want to assure you that going blogless is an option. You can accomplish with a standard website most of what you’d hope to accomplish with a blog.

Fortunately, like bathing suits, web marketing isn’t “one size fits all.” You may, however, need to be a bit more creative.

You’ll add content to your website when convenient, link to your new content on social sites, and engage your online community in discussion via those social websites.

You’ll also place website widgets on your website and use those widgets to connect your site to the social web.

Note that much of your website, especially sales pages, can be unsuitable for social media consumption. Do not be too concerned. People will reach those pages through links elsewhere on your site, search engines and whatever advertising you do.

Your site needs to be well optimized for both search engines and humans, i.e., relevant to your target audience and designed with them in mind.

OK. Gotta run. See you at the beach.

Spammers follow the path of least resistance. If you create a new opportunity for spam, spammers will exploit it.

Spammers have noticed that Facebook fan pages are gaining popularity and have started capitalizing on fan page vulnerability.

Facebook Fan Page and Event Page Spam

To spam a Facebook fan page is very simple. Spammers add themselves as fans of the Facebook page and then post their spam directly on the fan page wall — hit an run. The spam remains on the page wall until an administrator removes it.

Spammers can also spam the wall of a Facebook fan page discussion tab or event page.

Other Facebook Spam

Spammers are also occasionally posting their links on NetworkedBlogs discussion walls. Fortunately, NetworkedBlogs discussion walls aren’t prominently displayed, and there isn’t much incentive for a spammer to post there.

Well meaning Facebook friends frequently sign-up to use silly applications that seem harmless and fun. These applications then spam their Facebook friends’ profile pages.

Sadly, the proliferation of annoying applications has permanently driven many serious networkers off of Facebook in despair.

Top 10 Most Wanted Spammers

I hope that between now and next April 1 we can create a top spammer list and shame spammers into submission. We’ll post the list in post offices and big stores, as well as on web sites and, of course, on Facebook fan pages.

Spamming on Facebook fan pages and elsewhere on Facebook is indeed a real problem. I’m sorry, however, for using a misleading title. Please forgive my once-a-year April Fools prank.

The old media are languishing. Brick and mortar retail sales are disappointing. Consumers are looking increasingly to the web for news, information and the best deals.

While very many businesses have successfully embraced digital media, an even larger number of businesses are still figuring the Internet out and wondering how much is real and how much is hype.

Sadly, many businesses will disappear because they feared technological change or were unwilling to invest in projects that lacked a clear return on investment.

Blockbuster was outmaneuvered by competitor Netflix, because they did too little too late. Read the Forbes article, What Blockbuster Video Can Teach Us About Economics.

I worked several years ago for a free newspaper containing local ads that’s distributed in my area. The paper is feeling the squeeze of the Internet and, as far as I can tell, hasn’t found a satisfactory path forward. The staff finds it more and more difficult each week to meet their numbers. I believe I can help. I met resistance when I suggested it a year ago, but I’ll try again.

Expect me to be offline more than on the next week or so due to the Passover holiday. I hope each of you enjoys and finds fulfillment in whatever special days you might be observing.

Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment. I’ll reply as soon as I can.

I obsess over my website search engine ranking and check my keyword search engine rankings more often than once a week. After all, who doesn’t want to achieve higher search engine rankings and get more web site traffic?

However, top search engine ranking isn’t everything. There is much more to search engine optimization than merely increasing a website’s search engine ranking.

Your website can have a top Google search engine ranking yet not receive its fair share of traffic or receive insufficiently targeted traffic, which is also bad.

As I pointed out in a comment on 5 Steps to Make Wordpress an SEO Beast, an excellent article on the StylyzedWeb blog, you can be at the top of the search engines, but if too few people click through to your website or the wrong people click through, you can’t say that your site is search engine optimized.

A page’s title and description in its header often determine exactly how that page will appear in the search engine results and how likely searchers will be to click through to it. Header tags need to be optimized not only with search engines in mind but with people in mind too.

Search engine marketers are keenly aware of this issue, and search engine optimizers need to be equally aware.

Furthermore, if ample targeted visitors do come to your website, but your site is ineffective because of its content or design, then all your efforts to attract search engine traffic or any other traffic have been for naught.

Optimizing your website’s keywords to obtain a top search engine ranking is important, but the appeal of both your search engine listing and your actual website to your target audience are at least as important and should not be neglected.

Your comments are welcome and appreciated as usual.

This is a guest post by ZK. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

I’ve been running a web marketing blog for the last 15 months, but each time I sat down to write a post I ended up spending at least three to four times the amount of time that would take for me to write the post.

Over the last three to four months I reduced my blog writing time considerably by being more productive. In this blog post I’m going to explain how I achieved that.

1. Create a Daily Routine

This is a quite hard part, especially when you are just getting started with your blog. Getting into the habit of writing one blog post every day (or three times per week) is a challenged when you first try it.

But once you establish a daily writing routine it will get much easier because you just get used to it. You will still blog because you want to and because you like it, but you will grow the habit and force yourself to write no matter what.

2. Use a To-Do List

Or just a schedule. When you have a daily to-do list or a schedule you will be able to manage your time much better. You know what you need to do, when you need to do it and so on.

If you know you only have 30 minutes available, for example, you should skip working on a larger task and instead get rid of smaller things on your to-do list. The list itself, though, will be useful to make sure you spend your time as efficiently as possible.

3. Shut Down Distractions

Close down stuff like Thunderbird (e-mail client), Twitter client, Skype, Messenger and similar. If you don’t want to close Skype or Messenger, just set your status to “Message if important only” or simply just “Busy.” You just need to be able to set a point where you need to be very productive (while writing blog posts).

4. Take Notes When Something Important Comes to Your Mind

If you are in the middle of a task (for an example writing a blog post) have a notepad with you and write the idea there instead of doing it right now. If you jump from task to task you’ll lose focus and efficiency.

Just remember you need to finish whatever you are working on before you jump to the next task.

5. Outsource Stuff You Aren’t Good At

This is probably the best time-saver ever. You should always try to get help from people who are qualified on areas you are not. If you are not a good designer, for example, focus on writing content and outsource the design tasks on your blog to a designer. This will save you time and money in the long run.

Do you have any techniques for being and staying productive?

This is a guest post by Bryan Cassidy. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

I’ve always enjoyed skimming through magazines at local bookstores to review the annually featured holiday gift buying guides. These magazines usually give me great gift ideas for family and friends.

Thinking about that lately a creative idea sparked within my mind. What would happen if I created my own travel gift guide as there didn’t appear to be many of those ranking high in search engine results? The only problem was that Tourfolio.com (my blog) was only two months old and didn’t have solid relationships formed with other bloggers and readers.

I decided to start reaching out to a fellow travel blogger for whom I’ve guest posted on a few days before. I needed to develop a win-win situation — as described by Daniel in his “5 Things You Shouldn’t Do When Approaching Bloggers” post — that would allow gains for all involved. My blog was only two months old and needed to generate traffic while other mature blogs already had decent traffic but didn’t mind the opportunity to earn affiliate revenue.

In my e-mail conversations with the first travel blogger that I reached out too, we quickly came to the conclusion it would make more sense to involve other travel bloggers who target specific niches (e.g., eco-travelers, budget travelers, luxury travelers, sport travelers, etc…). The end result was her utilizing her well established network to recruit six other niche travel bloggers to put together their own gift idea lists.

The idea worked very well, and it became a collaborative gift buying guide across 8 different blogs. Below I want to share with you the four key areas that we focused on during the planning and promotion of the project.

1. Consistency – The decentralized approach of gift guides being posted on eight travel blogs required us to keep a somewhat consistent look and feel to help keep the readers’ focus. This became my main concern as I didn’t want to lose readers when they went from blog to blog. This was further compounded by the fact that neither of us used a similar theme or layout. It was decided by a few of us that the best approach would incorporate three major points. First, there was a need to inform readers of the other gift guides by using a bulleted list near the front of the post. Second, we needed to create very similar pricing categories (e.g., under $25.00, under $100.00 etc…). Third, we thought it would be important for each of us to add an affiliate disclosure paragraph. The similar structure between each blog would serve as a way to connect the blogs together even thoug.

2. Promotion – We began our all out blitz as soon each gift guide was posted by using our social media tools to promote. This started with us sending tweets to our followers about our own specific gift guide lists and retweeting the gift guide list of others. In addition, we focused on leaving comments on each others blog posts based on the theory that “more readers will leave comments if they see other readers commenting”. The timing of these promotions are also important with key shopping days such as “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” which are supposed to get customers in the mood to purchase holiday gifts.

3. Link Sharing – Reaching out to other well established blogs with the end goal of exchanging links can be very challenging when you have nothing to offer in return. This creative approach became a win-win situation for all involved as it offered link sharing and revenue. It was agreed that each of us would link to the other niche gift guides after our opening paragraph. This strategy allowed readers to quickly be informed of other gift guides and build some important links to our travel blogs.

4. Monetization – Even with my full-time job being in the accounting field, I know it would be nightmare to fairly divide the revenue between participants if the gift guide was posted in a single location. By each of us using our own blog, we were given the freedom to use our own affiliate programs (e.g, Amazon Affiliates, Adsense and Commission Junction) and track our own revenue.

If you have never tried to create a collaborative project like this one with bloggers in your niche, well, you should.

I spoke this morning with a very pleasant chap from the Westchester County Business Journal.

In the course of conversation I had occasion to mention that “nobody buys drills, they buy holes,” an aphorism attributed to Theodore Levitt, the late economist.

A drill is but a means to an end.

Similarly, few people care about social networking sites.

While I’m able to get excited about a minor Facebook tweak, a juicy little Gwave tidbit, a new Twitter tool, or even the latest Wordpress release, most people using social media care only about friendship, love, wealth, power or fame.

If you’re selling a product or service, people care not about your product but what it can do for them. Your product or service is but a means to an end, a drill, not a hole.

In your marketing, think about the problems potential customers and clients want to solve. Address those problems. Offer to solve them, and let them pay you for your solutions.

Nobody buys drills, they buy holes. Sell them the holes.

Web marketing to me is entirely about building up both social capital and search equity, nurturing relationships and reputations both with people and with search engines.

In Social Media vs. Search Engine Optimization and in The NEW Search Engine Optimization, I underscore the importance of both social media and search engine optimization and their interdependence. Your web marketing recipe must include plenty of healthy social media and search engine optimization ingredients.

I also point out in Website vs. Web Presence, that SEO, social media, relationships and reputation each contribute to the building of a presence on the web. Darren Rouse, the author of 31 Days to Build a Better Blog, shares in a video his blog-centric approach to web marketing in which social media sites — which aren’t under our complete control — serve as outposts for our blogs and websites, i.e. our home base — which we do control.

I agree with Darren’s point of view and adopted the same approach when I started Online Social Networking 24 months ago. I must stress however, that I have always envisioned search engines providing me with more than enough targeted traffic over time.

A Note of Caution

Many social media enthusiasts are in search of a predetermined blueprint for success. However, beware! One-recipe-feeds-all diners and buffets aren’t for you.

The precise description and proportion of each ingredient must depend upon your objectives, and upon the tastes of all the distinguished guests for whom you’re cooking up this sumptuous but scrumptious feast.

Bon appétit mon ami.

Once upon a time, a business would put up a website with its contact information, and that was the beginning and end of its web presence.

Those days are long gone. Savvy marketers today are very aware that a multidimensional approach is essential if one hopes to build a strong and responsive web presence.

Social Media and Search Engine Optimization

Social media and SEO are two of the most important aspects of building a presence on the web.

I’m reminded of a conversation I had several months ago with Christopher Boyer, creator of the Hospital Online Marketing Education site on the Ning network.

Chris mentioned that he tells his Healthgrades clients that search engines are where research starts on the Internet, and that a researcher’s attention is captured by the websites and social media content displayed on the very first page of search engine results. He asks hospital marketers to think of Google.com as their home page and to focus on dominating search engine results for their respective niches.

Social Media and Relationships

Darren Rouse of Problogger.net fame shows in his video, How I Use Social Media to Promote My Blogs, the way he incorporates a large number of social media sites in his web promotion strategy.

Notice that Darren not only uses social media to drive traffic to his blogs; he uses it to build valuable relationships with people. Relationships and Internet buzz play key roles in today’s web marketing.

A Web Presence is Much More than Just a Website

The web presence paradigm has evolved. Search engine optimization, social media, relationships and reputation all contribute to the impact that we and our brands have on the web.

Your valuable comment below (and your subscription to this blog) will help us to build our relationship.

I read an excellent article this afternoon in the Wall Street Journal by Jessica E. Vascellaro about the declining role of e-mail in our day-to-day communication, as services like Twitter, Facebook and lots of other social networking sites continue to grow in popularity.
According to Ms. Vascellaro, we obviously still use email. However, email was better suited [...]
Post from: SocialMarketingReport.com

Vascellaro about the declining role of e-mail in our day-to-day communication, as services like Twitter, Facebook and lots of other social networking sites continue to grow in popularity.

According to Ms. Vascellaro, we obviously still use email. However, email was better suited to the way we used the Internet in the past, when we’d go online intermittently to read our messages.

“Now we are always connected, whether we are sitting at a desk or on a mobile phone. The always-on connection, in turn, has created a host of new ways to communicate that are much faster than email, and more fun.”

If more of our attention is being directed toward social media and away from email, is there a future for email marketing?

The success of email marketing depends on our ability to efficiently reach our target markets via their email inboxes. As people increasingly turn to social media, and internet service providers apply more aggressive spam filtering, email marketing becomes less viable.

Just last night, a friend messaged me on Facebook saying that she was “shifting over from an e-newsletter to blogging,” and that she was looking for a little advice.

Email marketers want to know how to react to the trend toward social media and social marketing.

Advice for Email Marketers

Here are seven tips for coping with the decline in email communication:

Act Now – Don’t sit on the sidelines like your old media friends. There are still plenty of newspaper publishers scratching their heads wondering what they’re going to do about their failing businesses.

Diversify – Adopt a variety of new social marketing channels, but do not discontinue your email marketing campaigns. Build on your past successes.

Stay Cool – Don’t overreact. Email communication isn’t going away any time soon. Gradually make adjustments and find the allocation of resources that delivers you the best ROI.

Learn Social Media – There are many social marketing resources and a fairly steep social media learning curve. Either make social media training a priority for yourself and stick with it or find someone to whom you can delegate or outsource all or part of it.

Learn SEO – Learn search engine optimization as well, or again, delegate or outsource it.

Keep Testing – Just as you’d test different lists or advertising copy, test different social media venues and content to determine what works for you, and what doesn’t. Be flexible.

Get Help – Even if you do decide to educate yourself, look to social media and web marketing experts for help along the way. Their guidance will save you much time and money in the long run.

I still use my email autoresponder to communicate with many of my blog subscribers. However, email accounts for only 2% of my total blog traffic. Google, Entrecard and Twitter combined account for about 80%, and all other sources add to the remaining 18%.

I will have more to say on email marketing and on list building in future articles. I suggest meanwhile that you read List Building Paradigm Shift which I wrote at the beginning of the year.

How did you get the idea to start Legacy Locker?
A couple of years ago, my grandmother passed away. She was 94-years-old
but fairly Internet-savvy. She e-mailed with tons of friends and
family, and she even played bridge on Yahoo. When she passed away, my
father and I wanted to get into her Hotmail account to let people know
what had happened. There were people she was in touch with that the
rest of the family didn’t necessarily know. After a bit of trying, we
realized it was a futile effort and gave up.

A year later, I was on a plane and had one of those moments where I
wondered, if something happened right now, what would happen to all my
stuff? My wife and I have two kids. We have a will and an estate plan
in place by a family lawyer to take care of all our things. Yet I
started thinking about all the online things in my world – my e-mail
address, my computer login – and realized they would all disappear
because nobody has my passwords.

The plane landed. I promptly called my business partner and said we
have to do something about this. We launched in April, and we have both
a free and paid service.

What are some of the features?
With Legacy Locker, it is somewhere between an online will and an
online safety deposit box for your online stuff. While creating an
account, you assign what is called a verifier. This person is a family
lawyer, spouse or parent. It’s someone who would verify that something
has happened to you.

Then, you create a series of what we call digital assets. A digital
asset is your username and password for an account, such as e-mail,
PayPal, eBay, a blog, LinkedIn, Twitter or pretty much anything you
have online. Next, you assign your digital assets to a digital
beneficiary. Again, this could be a spouse, business partner, friend,
family member, etc.

The site securely stores all this information, and in the inevitable
event of someone’s passing, it is distributed to the people that you
had specified. You can even add little notes as to what you want to
have happen to your accounts, whether it’s keep your blog online
forever or shut down your Facebook account.

How many members does Legacy Locker currently have?
We have several thousand users. The majority of the users are on the
free plan, but we have enough paying users to be cash flow positive,
which is great for a start-up that is less than a year old.

How much does Legacy Locker cost?
In addition to the free account, there are two types of paid accounts.
One has an annual fee that is $29.99 a year. The other one has a
one-time fee, and that’s $299.

What are some of the differences between free and paid accounts?
You can only have three digital assets with a free account. Both paid
accounts give you access to the full feature set, which includes
unlimited digital assets and digital beneficiaries, as well as 10
uploaded scanned documents and five uploaded videos.

Scanned documents could include a copy of your actual will that you
might have scanned in, a deed to a house, a stock certificate or any
other important physical documents.

Say I have a scan of my passport on my Legacy Locker account. So if
I’m ever traveling and lose my passport, I can go to any Internet cafe
anywhere in the world, print it out and take it to my embassy or
whatever I need to do.

How did you grow Legacy Locker?
We follow very traditional models for a brand new type of service. Our
model shows that additional use equals additional revenue to cover all
growth costs. We charge users for a service, and our infrastructure
costs are fairly low. We did raise funding to build the site, but the
ongoing maintenance is fairly low as well.

Unlike a lot of Internet companies, where there is an amazing
service but a lack of clarity as to what people will pay for, people
are used to paying for lawyers or for a safety deposit box.

Why would someone want to use Legacy Locker as opposed to going through a wills lawyer?
First, we recommend that everybody have some type of protection for
their physical assets. Then, they should think about the online side.
It’s not the kind of thing that you want to burden a family lawyer
with. They don’t want to maintain lists of passwords. Plus, you’re
probably updating your password maybe once, twice a year or more.
Again, that’s not something that your lawyer should be doing for you.

So, we believe that we are a complement to an actual will, estate plan or trust.

If you update your e-mail password, will it update automatically in your Legacy Locker account?
You have to do it manually right now, but the good thing is it takes
seconds. For the system to be able to automatically track passwords, we
would need to somehow integrate with all the different potential
services out there. It is something we’ve been looking into for the
future.

Would you ever offer any white label solutions?
Absolutely. We’re talking to estate planners, who might want to brand
it for their own brand to their clientele. Another avenue is possibly
with banks or insurance. That is a part of where our big growth will be
– letting huge companies offer our service to either their employees as
a benefits program or to other customer bases like that.

Are there any other companies offering a service similar to your own? Who would you consider your main competition?
One is Deathswitch.net, and another is called SlightlyMorbid.com.
These are homegrown systems that are very cool. The difference is our
focus is on bringing awareness to the estate planner industry.

This is a guest post by Srikanth AD. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Bloggers love to have comments on their blogs. It builds social proof, enriches the content, fosters community and so on. Here are six plugins that you can use to boost the number of comments on your blog and make the commenting process more efficient.

1. Better Comments Manager

Replying to comments from your readers will make them come back in the future, because they will know that your care for them.

The “Better Comments Manager” plugin allows you to reply to the comments right from the Admin panel. In the absence of this plug-in, you have to visit the post individually and reply to the comment which is time consuming and tedious if you have tons of comments to reply.

2. Subscribe to Comments

By installing this plug-in in your WordPress blog your readers can get email notifications about the further comments on the post. When a reader comments in a post and checks the box to get E-mail notifications, it helps him to stay in touch with the comments and encourages him to come back to your blog and stay engaged in the discussion.

This helps to add more value to your post as more and more commenter’s exchange their ideas and views on the post.

3. WordPress Thread Comment

This plugin for WordPress allows the readers to reply to a specific comment, making it easier to follow the discussion. The plugin should also be compatible with most WordPress themes around, and installation is not that difficult.

4. IntenseDebate

This is one another cool WordPress plugin to consider if you are looking to get more comments and visits to your WordPress blog. This plug-in encourages your readers to actively participate in the discussion and it allows them to rate a comment posted with simple thumbs up or down buttons.

They can also leave active replies to the comments or start a new comment. Commenters can also subscribe to the replies and new comments such that they get email notification when a reply to their comment is received or any new comment is added to the post.

5. Absolute Comments

This plugin for WordPress also allows you to instantly reply to comments right from the admin panel.

The interesting feature of this plug-in is that it supports threaded comments, and if you have set to receive email notification, when a new comment is posted you can see a direct reply link to the comment in the email.

6. Contact Commenters

This is a great tool to interact with the commenters of your blog posts. By using this plugin you can send email to selected commenters, perhaps thanking their for their comments or asking their opinions on a related issue.

Metaphorically speaking, the same is true of any tool that can empower us to perform a function more effectively.

The Internet gives us the ability to transfer information with relative ease, and it is also enables a great variety of online tools to provide us with virtual leverage.

Web-Based Tools

Here are six web-based tools that we’ve come to rely upon to save us time or money or to help us be more effective:

Internet-based mail – e-mail, autoresponders and PDF Files

Live communication – VOIP phone, chat and webinars

Digital media – websites, blogs and micro-blogging sites such as Twitter

Social networking sites – Facebook, Ning, LinkedIn, etc.

Content sharing sites – YouTube, Flickr, StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious, etc.

Search engines - Google, Bing, etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve had some experience with each of them, and this is a very partial list.

What Can Go Wrong

I probably don’t have to tell you that things don’t always go right. Here are the three obstacles that can most easily sidetrack you:

Using the wrong tool – Download a large file using dial-up Internet, and by the time it finishes downloading, you’ll forget why to wanted it in the first place. Use a shabby autoresponder, and most of your e-mails will end up in recipients’ spam folders.

Using the tool wrong - Social media tools and search engines have steep learning curves, and learning how to use them properly is typically a big undertaking. Misunderstand or misuse social media or SEO techniques, and your work can be set back by months.

The tool breaks - Your Internet connection goes down for a week, your Facebook gets phished, or your blog gets corrupted. You’ll be pulling out your hair, unless of course you’re fortunate enough to be bald.

Many marketers contact me for help because they’ve been using the wrong tool or using the tool wrong.

An Ounce of Prevention

So — choose the right tools, learn to use your tools properly, and develop good contingency plans for when Murphy’s Law does strike — because it most certainly will, and at the worst possible moment.

What do you think?
