Last week I told you guys I was working on a really long post that I hoped would become popular, remember? Well, I just published it on one of my other websites. The post is called 100 Ways to Increase Your Website Traffic.

I had seen a couple of similar lists around the web, but most of them contained only a single sentence per item, and most items were not directly related to generating traffic at all.

That is why I decided to write my own list. I made sure only to include points that are really going to increase your traffic (even if just slightly), and I also explained each point and included links to relevant resources where suitable.

The result is a monster post with almost 6,000 words. Here is a quote:

30. Launch a review contest. If you want to increase your search rankings you could launch a contest where people need to write about the content in order to get an entry. The links you’ll get will send you both Google juice and new visitors. Keep in mind that you need a good prize to motivate people to write about your contest though.

31. Launch a voting contest. You basically need to create a contest where the winner will be picked with a voting session. Suppose you have a fitness website. You could invite your readers to submit their best fitness tip, and then a voting session would decide which tip gets the prize. This would motivate participants to link to the voting session and to encourage their friends to visit your website and vote.

32. Launch a traffic contest. If traffic is what you want, why not be direct about it? You can launch a contest where people need to send traffic to one particular page inside your website. It could be the contest page (for a viral effect) or a resource page (e.g., a page where you give away an ebook). After the established time frame (e.g., 2 weeks, 1 month or anything else), you’ll simply need to check your web analytics to see which websites sent you more visitors, and then award the prizes.

Check it out. And if you like it, please help me spread the word with a stumble or a retweet!

Online publishers have free tools like Quantcast available for free to measure site traffic, but no one to date has offered robust and free video analytics to sites — until now. Today, we are changing that, giving away the very same InPlay video analytics that are counted on daily by top media companies to any publisher for free.

To integrate, all you have to do is click here, pick a player or platform, drop the code into their site’s player and real-time stats will start being collected in seconds.

The suite works in any Flash player, like Adobe OSMF, LongTailVideo’s JW Player or a generic Flash player (HTML 5 and Silverlight due later this summer). Real-time metrics include uniques, views, time-watched, traffic sources, city-level audience geography and more — all easily exported and shared.

This launch is a big deal for the Internet’s video publishers! Now any site that is running video can access the world’s best analytics to understand how their viewers are interacting with each and every video on their site.

A couple of months ago I was talking with my editor there (Maeve Maddox, the person with the deepest English knowledge I have ever met), and we started discussing how an average person can improve her writing skills without spending too much time at it.

We figured that the best way is probably to learn and avoid the most common English mistakes. Things like exchanging less with fewer, misspelling its as it’s, or placing commas where they are not supposed to be.

Long story short, we decided to write a book with a compilation of the 100 most common writing mistakes of the English language (Maeve actually wrote it, and I helped with the formating and production). The title is: “100 Writing Mistakes to Avoid: A practical guide to 100 common mistakes of spelling, usage, grammar, and punctuation.”

The book was launched a couple of weeks ago, in digital format (i.e., PDF), and the feedback has been great. We are offering a full money-back guarantee, and out of hundreds of copies sold only one person asked for the refund so far. On top of that a university in the United States contacted us, stating that they might be interested in adding the book as a recommendation for the English students.

How much does it cost? Right now we are offering a 50% discount to promote the launch, so you can get your copy for $9.99 instead of $19.99, which is the normal price. I believe any person would benefit from this book, and bloggers even more, so check out the sales page to get more details or order it.

As I said, only the digital version is available at this point, which means you’ll be able to download the book in PDF format right after completing the order.

Well, we just re-opened the doors, and now the program is free!

During the last launch it had a cost of $392, and yet we got hundreds of members aboard. On top of that the feedback was great, as most members said the knowledge they got out of the course was more than worth it. So why did I decided to make it free?

As I said, to make it accessible to anyone who wants to join, and to foster an active community there. These were my goals with the program, and I realized that making it free was the right move to achieve that. Probably I won’t be making as much money as I could with this project, but that is fine with me.

There is one requirement before you can get your free member account, though. You need to sign-up for a hosting plan with one of our partners (HostGator.com and HostNine.com). Obviously I’ll earn a commission when you do that, but still I think it is a win-win situation. You’ll need to spend $10 or so, and in exchange you’ll get a quality hosting plan to host one more website, and access to a training program that used to cost $392.

The “Lesson Grid” section has been revamped, and now it has over 100 training pieces. Last time I checked all the lessons, interviews and case studies combined had over 150,000 words….

Another section I think you guys will love is the “Live Case Study” one. I am basically building a website from scratch, and you’ll be able to follow step by step until it starts making a decent amount of money.

Finally, you’ll also be able to interact both with me and with the other members on our private forums. I try to answer to every single question that is posted there.

So head over to OnlineProfits.com and sign-up. I’ll see you inside!

This is a guest post by Srinivas Rao. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Between the interviews with up and coming bloggers series that I ran on my personal blog and the launch of BlogcastFM.com, I’ve had the opportunity to interview more than 30 bloggers. Not only have I learned quite a bit about blogging but I’ve learned about people and how to to conduct interviews with bloggers.

1. Everybody is approachable

One of the things I absolutely love about the world we live in today is that we have access to people like we have never had before. However, one of the things that holds us back is fear. We see a well known blogger and we become intimidated by their RSS counter that says 5000. Surprisingly, these people are not much different than a blogger who’s just starting out. They’ve just been around longer and know more. They started out just like you with nobody reading their blog. Most people are very approachable and you just have to make the effort and reach out.

2. Listen more than you talk

In the first interview I ever did, I got some unsolicited advice. I was told that I talk too much. When I went back and listened to it, I realized that I did talk too much. If you’re interviewing somebody, the spotlight is on them. It’s a chance for that person to talk about themselves and their blog. Embrace that and your interviews will be much better.

3. Ask questions based on the answers you receive

This ties into the above point about listening. Part of what has made my interviews get smoother and smoother is that I start with one simple question “How did you get started?” and then I build all the rest of the questions I ask on the answers I get. Not only does this force you to listen, it makes the whole thing flow much better.

4. Treat it as conversation

In a recent interview I did, the interviewee was actually nervous. While it was challenging I told him to think of it as two guys at a bar just having a beer and chatting. When you get too formal then you become unnatural and it’s really obvious to the people listening. The interview is an opportunity for everybody to eavesdrop on your conversation. If you are really formal, nobody will really want to eavesdrop. One of the things we love as human beings are stories. Let the interviewee tell a story. It’s a conversation, not an interrogation.

5. Provide Value to your listeners

This is kind of a no-brainer. The clear goal behind interviewing a blogger should be to draw out valuable advice that your listeners can put to use right away. I try to make sure that every blogger I talk to offers at least one tip that I haven’t heard of before that listeners can implement right away.

6. Everybody has value to add

Regardless of whether they are big or small, people can offer a valuable perspective on things. Just because somebody has only been around for a short time, don’t discount what they have to say. It’s also really useful to interview bloggers completely out your topic area. The other day I interviewed a parenting blogger. As a single 30-something male, I don’t spend any time reading mom blogs, but I still learned some very useful things from talking to a parenting blogger.

7. Research the person you are interviewing

Spend a little bit of time learning about the person you are interviewing before you do the interview. This way if you ever do hit a point in the interview where you lose your flow, you’ll have a list of things to go back to and ask about. Some things you could ask about include:

the most recent post they wrote

a product they just released

  something about their personal life

8. Maintain/Nurture Relationships

Once you have interviewed a blogger, you have formed a relationship. But just remember that it doesn’t end after the interview. It’s important to maintain and nurture that relationship. If it hadn’t been for the relationships I maintained with everybody I’ve interviewed, I would not have had nearly as much support in getting the word out about the ebook that went along with a new site launch. Some ways to maintain/nurture relationship include:

Follow the interviewee on Twitter

  Comment on their blog posts

Add them on Facebook or Linkedin

I’m a big believer in the power of interviews. I think it’s really a tremendously valuable way to improve your knowledge and provide great value to your readers. Don’t underestimate the value you can gain from both listening to and conducting interviews with bloggers.

I receive at least a couple of emails every week asking when the Online Profits training program is going to re-open for new members. Given that we are getting close to that actual date I wanted to make it official: we’ll be re-opening the program on June 08 (not this coming Tuesday, the following).

I also have some big news regarding the program. The first one I can’t get into details right now, but I can say I wanted to make the program accessible to as many people as possible, even if that meant I would earn less money with that project. My goal has always been to build a strong community there and to help as many people as possible, and I’ll be pushing in that direction now.

The bottom line is: If you have been considering to join an Internet marketing training program in the past, but never quite got convinced, I am sure you will now. Mark June 08 on your calendar and you’ll know what I am talking about.

The second news is that I completely revamped the program. There are more lessons, more videos, more resources and so on. And there is also a new section inside the members area which I think you’ll love: the Live Case Study. This will be a real website that I’ll build from zero until it reaches a decent level of profitability. Members of our program will be able to follow all the steps I’ll go through, with screenshots and explanations of why I am doing everything. This is to make sure members will understand how to implement all the techniques and strategies they’ll learn from the lessons.

Finally, make sure you have downloaded the 10 Deadly Business Mistakes You Should Avoid report. It will give you an idea of what our lessons look like, and it will also put you in the Online Profits newsletter, where you’ll get notified about the re-launch.

This is a guest post from Ali Hale. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

When you launch a new blog, you’re full of energy. You might write a post every day, you might be commenting all over the place, determined that your blog is going to be a success.

But as the days and weeks go by, your motivation starts to fade. Perhaps you could count your daily hits on your fingers. Maybe getting to 100 RSS subscribers seems impossible. Your only comments are from your mom. Plus, you’ve got a busy life. Your posting schedule starts to slip. A few days go by between posts. Then you go on vacation, and it’s a few weeks. You end up posting an apology for not posting. No-one seems to care.

But if you quit, then you’re never going to reach any of your goals. Here’s how to find the motivation you need.

Promise Yourself Six Months

When I started my first “pro” blog, I told myself that, however few readers I had, and however hard I found it to write, I’d stick with it for at least six months. In those early months when it felt like no-one was reading my blog, I focused on that commitment.

Unless you’re either very lucky, or have previous experience blogging, it’s going to take at least six months (and probably a year or two) to build up a serious following online. But if you never make it past that six month hurdle, you’ll never succeed in your blogging aims.

You can stick with your blog and give it your best shot, for just six months. If you’re still not seeing the growth, readership or results that you want after that time, then you can reconsider.

Get Into a Writing Routine

How often have you put off writing a blog post because you weren’t in the mood to sit down and write? How often have you let a week or a month go by without blogging, because somehow you never quite found the time?

If you’re aiming to be a professional blogger, you’re also aiming to be a professional writer. This means getting into the habit of writing on a regular basis. You don’t necessarily need to write every single day, but you do need to establish a good routine.

That means working out:

How much time you can realistically commit. Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint: don’t burn out by using up all your energy too early on.

Your best time of day to write.

A place where you can write without distractions.

I’d suggest trying to commit a minimum of two hours a week for just writing for your blog. (Not reading, commenting, Twittering or anything else!) If you can commit more time, that’s great – but two hours is long enough to write one or two good blog posts.

Time of day makes more difference than you might think. Even if you’re not generally a morning person, you might find it easier to write before a day’s work than after it. Alternatively, you may be able to focus best if you write in your lunch hour (when you know only have a limited amount of time – so you have to get on with it).

Finding the right place is important too. No-one can write well with the television blaring and kids running around. You might take a tip from ProBlogger himself, Darren Rowse, and find a coffee shop where you can write. Or you could try your local library, or just a room in your house where you can shut the door and tell the family not to disturb you.

Make it Interesting

I’ve got a poster titled “The Only 12 ½ Writing Rules You’ll Ever Need“. Rule 2 is:

If it’s boring to you, it’s boring to your reader.

If you’re lacking motivation because you’re trying to write about something which bores you, then there’s a good chance that it’s not going to be of much interest to your readers either. Unless you’ve created a blog purely for the purposes of getting search engine traffic and encouraging ad clicks, you’ll want readers who are actually going to stick around.

Sometimes, of course, you’ll be writing a post which isn’t necessarily end-to-end thrills. Perhaps you’ve been working in your particular field for years, but you’re writing a beginners’ guide. So how can you keep it interesting for you – and for your reader?

Find a new angle. You might come up with a clever comparison which brings a fresh insight to a well-covered area. For instance, three of my favorite posts on Daily Blog Tips are these ones which used a Star Trek analogy – blogging the Klingon Way, the Vulcan Way and the Borg Way.

Make it extraordinary. Don’t just rehash the same old posts on every blog in your niche – take it to a whole new level. Write, edit and proofread so that your post is as well-written as possible. Find images or illustrations that really enhance what you’re saying.

Tell a story. Not only do stories grab attention, they’re also memorable (read Chip and Dan Heath’s book Make to Stick if you want more on the power of stories).

Keep Your Readers in Mind

Even if your blog only gets a handful of readers every day, there are people out there reading and enjoying your content. When you’re lacking motivation, it helps to focus on your readers. You might create an “ideal reader“—perhaps an enthusiastic beginner in your niche. When you write, you can imagine that you’re addressing this reader directly.

Sometimes, I’ve written blog posts in response to a reader’s question or a comment on my blog. These posts are often easy to write because:

    * Someone else has provided me with a starting point
* I know that the answer matters to at least one person in the world!

If your reader numbers are too low to motivate you, then think about the future readers for your posts. If someone comes across this post in a year or two, when your blog has grown hugely, it could still be just as impactful as it is for someone who reads it on the day you publish it.

Most of us get a great sense of achievement and happiness from genuinely helping someone. If you write a useful, interesting, engaging blog post, you will be helping people – and you’ll see your blog grow. It’s a motivation loop: the more you can help your readers, the more readers you’ll have, and the keener you’ll be to blog!

How do you stay motivated when you’re tempted to quit writing your blog?

About the Author: Ali Hale is a freelance blogger, and author of The Blogger’s Guide to Effective Writing – an ebook which covers everything you need to know about writing brilliant blog posts (especially when you need a bit of extra motivation).

You probably heard about the launch of “Outsource Control”, right? It is a program created by John Reese (one of the most successful marketers around) that guides people on how to achieve better results by learning how to outsource parts of their businesses.

I was not planning to promote this launch, but I have always been interested in outsourcing, so I went to watch the free videos that John was giving away as a promotional material. Once I watched the first two I thought to myself “Man, this is some good stuff,” and that is why I decided to sign-up as an affiliate and recommend them.

Even if you are not considering to buy his product at all you should still check the videos out. You’ll need to subscribe to his email list, but that is it, and the videos are really worth it.

Here are some of the things you’ll learn:

The basic outsourcing principle that leads to wealth.

A couple of websites you can use to find full time workers for as
low as 300 dollars per month.

A gadget you can use to brainstorm ideas and communicate them to
your workers.

The test you can use to verify whether the worker is smart/proactive or not.

The software that John uses to manage all his workers and projects.

Click here to sign-up and get access to the videos. Just to give you an idea of how much people are liking them, a couple of videos got over 1,000 comments already.

Everyone at TubeMogul is very excited to launch Destinations today (release here, step-by-step how-to guide here). We are confident that our OneLoad users will get tremendous value from this new feature that we’re giving away an iPad as part of the launch!

Here’s how the promotion works:

The 1,000th user to set up a valid custom destination or custom feed and upload a video will win a free iPad (16GB, Wi-Fi version)

To be eligible, users must adhere to our Terms of Service

Just remember that the iPad will go to the 1,000th user – not the 1,000th custom destination or feed. So feel free to set up as many custom destinations/feeds as you like, but only the first one per user will count towards the promotion.

Good luck everyone!

If you work full time on the web you are probably always looking for new niches with good potential, right? I am no different.

Lately I considered entering into three new niches, but I dropped the idea due to lack of time (i.e., because I wouldn’t be able to go hard). I figured I could blog about them, however, as there might be some readers out there with time available and looking for ideas.

Niche One: The iPad

For this niche you would be a bit late already, but there is still room if you are willing to work hard at it. Given the buzz of the launch, this device will certainly be around for a while. And like the iPhone, it will probably create an ecosystem around it. I have seen many iPhone related websites making a killing, and the iPad offers very similar opportunities. You could create a site to review all the best apps, a site to explain how to tweak and mod the iPad, a site selling related gadgets and so on.

Niche Two: Starcraft II

This game is going to be BIG. Blizzard is already doing closed beta tests, and the launch is planned for the middle of the year if I am not wrong. In other words, you still have time to build your site and start promoting it before the competition gets tougher. Even if you dominate a sub-niche, like “Starcraft 2 strategy” or “Starcraft 2 hacks,” you’ll still be able to make a good amount of money from advertising and related products.

Niche Three: World Cup

I am not talking about the 2010 World Cup, but about World Cups in general. Sure this is a good year to enter such a niche, but given the competition I believe you would start seeing results only in the next World Cup, so 2014. The idea would be to create a website/blog about the World Cup event. It would include fun facts, trivia, quizzes, information about all past World Cups and so on. Then every 4 years it would also cover the current World Cup. There are a couple of sites like this around, but no authority established yet. The domain WorldCupLovers.com is available if anyone is interested.

What about you guys, what niches have you considered entering lately?

Let’s clear one thing right away: yes I am an affiliate for the coaching program I mentioning below, which means I’ll earn a commission if you end up purchasing it. But your trust is much more important to me than any commission I might earn, so rest assured I am only talking about this coaching program because a) I have actually used it b) I have achieved good results after applying what I learned there and c) I believe you and other people could do the same.

Now back to the central question: have you ever considered launching a membership site? If you have, I would recommend you to take a look at Membership Site Mastermind. Created by Yaro Starak, this is a 6-week program that you’ll give you all the information you need to launch a profitable membership site.

I was one of the first people to have access to Yaro’s course, and it helped me to launch the OnlineProfits.com training program. If you want to learn more about that story, check out this podcast interview I did with Yaro a while ago.

Membership Site Mastermind is structured around 6 modules. They are:

Topic Selection and Preeminence

    Traffic Generation

    Human Resources and Technology

    Content and Pricing

    The Launch Process

    Post Launch Activities

Each module comes with 2 hours worth of video content, including transcripts and checklists to make sure you’ll act on the important steps. The program was closed for the past six months, and today it is opening again for new members, so check it out.

you in a face-to-face video conversation with a random stranger. Use
of the site has grown quickly since its launch in November. ~35,000
people are on Chatroulette at any given time,
according to a traffic count published on the Web site’s homepage. The
large majority of the site’s users are male and overwhelmingly young.
Whether Chatroulette will be more than just a bizarre blip on the
Internet pop-culture radar is still up for debate. Ostrow, of Mashable,
believes advertisers would not want to be associated with the lewdness
of the site. “I think it’s certainly an interesting experiment and I
can see
kind of why it’s catching on,” he said. “On the other hand, I don’t
think it’s something that is a sustainable business, obviously, when
you look at the content that’s on there.” As of yet, the site has few
rules. Users are supposed to be at
least 16 years old, and they’re not supposed to show pornography on the
site. None of those restrictions, however, are clearly enforceable. The
site is
run by a 17-year-old high school student in Russia named Andrey
Ternovskiy. FULL ARTICLE @ ABS CBN NEWS

Are you always losing your car keys; or do you know precisely where they are? Needless to say, hunting for lost keys is a frustrating waste of time. So is hunting for lost video files while you are editing video.

To avoid that problem, it helps to know how your program creates and stores files. Do yourself a big favor and develop a good file management system and stay organized right from the very beginning.

An external hard drive will give you plenty of room for large media file storage.

File management when it comes to video editing is one of the basics that rarely gets talked about. Probably because it’s kind of boring, but it’s so critical let’s risk a bit of yawning.

The first thing you should do when you begin a video editing project is launch your application and create a brand new project. Immediately do a “save as” of your empty project. Give it a logical name that will be easy to recognize or remember. Save it in a specific place that you have set aside for video projects. Set yourself a clear pathway of folders that is logical so you will not want to move them later. Some programs do this for you by default others need to be told.

It is especially important to have someplace specific on your computer where you put all your big media files. When you capture video or audio on your computer, you need to know where it is going so you can locate it later. As you capture, one of the decisions you make is to tell the computer where you want it saved. Moving media files after you begin editing can create huge headaches so put it in a good place right off the top.

Let’s get some terminology down before we go any further. In video editing, there are various types of files:

Media Files: All video and audio clips you use in your project.

Project files: Created by your editing program while you edit.

Sharing files: For your finished video.

Video Files: Project Files vs. Media Files vs. Sharing Files, What’s the Difference?

Let me explain the difference between media files, project files and sharing files. Project files are the skeleton of a video editing project. The media files cover the skeleton so to speak. The sharing file is what you actually upload to the web or duplicate on disc.

Media files are your actual clips of video or audio. If you shoot ten minutes of video of at the beach then capture it into your computer, it becomes a video clip media file. If you record some narration, it becomes an audio clip media file. Media files are huge. Video files are substantially larger than audio files but both need plenty of room.

The project files are what your edit program creates to tell itself all the critical information about the project settings and all of the edit decisions you make. Project files are created and read by the program you are using. No other program will be able to read these files. Project files are tiny compared to media files.

Project files contain information about where the media files you are working with are located. Project files also tell the program how you want those media files manipulated and presented, but they do not contain the media files themselves, just notes on those media files. The project files can be thought of as a list of detailed information about where your media is stored and what to do with it so that it’s edited in the way you want.

When you save your project, you are saving all your editing decisions, the media files were saved when you captured. Now this is important….NONE OF YOUR ORIGINAL MEDIA FILES ARE ACTUALLY ALTERED BY ANYTHING YOU EDIT. Those media files remain exactly as they were when you captured them. This is called “non-destructive editing,” and it is a good thing. You ALWAYS want to keep your original video and audio.

Your editing program and all of its project files manipulate the media files and create new media files if need be. That is what rendering is all about. When your video editing program renders, it is creating a brand new media file that contains all the video, audio, graphics and special effects you just edited together. The new media file is called a render file and will be located in a render folder by default.

A sharing file is the video file you create at the very end of an editing project. Once you have everything the way you want it, you convert it all into one file that can easily be read by any one of the common video players. Remember, project files can only be read by whatever program created them but your final video needs to be read by anybody with a computer so sharing files are used for that. These are the common file formats you hear about like .wmv, .mov, .flv, MPEG4, and so forth.

Sharing files are for sharing your final video, but what if you want to share your project with another video editor? If you want them to have access to your project so they can work on it on their computer, you will have to give them not only the project files but all the media files too. If you just gave them the project files, it would just be the bare bones skeleton and they could not do anything with it.

If you want to learn the meaning of “panic” move your media files in the middle of a big video editing project and watch your project files get confused. The project file contains the path to locate your media and if that changes, then the program has no idea where to fetch it.

Your video application will send you some kind of warning message, maybe a big red X to let you know it’s missing the media it needs. If you know where it has been moved, reconnecting is simple. But if you moved them without a thought to a logical file management system, then it is a lot like hunting for your lost car keys you laid down at 2 a.m. without thinking!

Thanks for reading Video Production Tips

Next Monday (January 18) we’ll open the doors of the Online Profits training program for new members again. In order to celebrate the launch we are having a small contest over there, giving away 3 iPod Nanos (the 8G version).

I wanted to make participating in the contest really easy, and here is the deal: you just need to retweet the contest post to enter the final draw. There is a retweet button on that post, so it takes literally one second and one click to enter.

Alternatively you can also copy and paste the following text and tweet it:

Retweet To Enter The OnlineProfits.com Contest And Win an 8G iPod Nano! http://ow.ly/1mZobz

The deadline for participation is this Friday, and next Monday the three winners will be announced (as an update on the same contest page).

Good luck!
